In Their Own Words: Football Is My Escape

Back as a veteran fifth year player, Tight End Lake McRee is coming into this season with unfinished business on his mind. Despite setbacks, injuries and challenges, Lake shares how stepping onto the gridiron is his escape from everything else going on in the world.

“It definitely doesn’t feel like my final year. I still don’t feel like the old guy on the team, although there’s no doubt that I am one of them. This offseason I talked to Coach Riley about taking on more of a vocal leadership role and I feel like I’m ready to step into it.

I came back this season because there was still more to be done. After missing part of last year, I knew I wanted to come back and continue improving before pursuing my ultimate goal of playing in the NFL. There have been so many teams that I’ve been a part of here who have been so close, it’s hard to just pack up your bags and leave. We have a lot of building to do as a team this year to achieve our goals, but we have the pieces to do it.

I’m a Trojan through and through, and there has never been a doubt in my mind about staying here and finishing what I started.”
