Saving Lives and Fighting On

An Olympic Dream, Helping Rebuild LA and More From House of Victory

IN THEIR OWN WORDS:
ONE FOOT IN FRONT OF THE OTHER

One Foot in Front of the Other

By Avery Howell

Last summer, I was selected to participate with the 18U Canadian National Team. I was ready to play with that team and compete in the FIBA AmeriCup.

But during 18U camp, I got called up to the senior team camp to determine Team Canada’s Olympic roster. Which was an adjustment. I basically went from playing high school basketball in Idaho to playing alongside and against professional hoopers in Canada and Europe. I went with the team to Belgium and Spain, practicing and playing in exhibition games against international competition. Eventually I was named an alternate for the Olympic roster and came straight to USC once the final team went on to Paris.

But that basketball whirlwind over the summer was the best thing I could have done because of how it prepared me for college. Although the jump from high school to college ball is a big one, participating, competing and traveling with the Canadian National Team helped me prepare for what college basketball would be like.

It was a great basketball experience, but it also left me wanting more. My ultimate goal is to play for Team Canada in the 2028 Olympics and to play professionally in the WNBA for as long as I can.

And now I’ve gotten a taste of it.

A GLOBAL DINING EXPERIENCE

BUILDING THE ROAD TO RECOVERY

House of Victory is committed to continuing to support our community’s ongoing recovery efforts in the wake of the deadly LA wildfires. We have continued to connect football student-athletes with opportunities to step up and give back through recent events with Impact LA and the ANE Foundation.

Over the course of several days, nearly 50 football athletes served the community, helping sort donations, organize supplies for affected individuals and spending time with evacuees.

GIVE BLOOD, SAVE LIVES

As the United States faces a critical blood shortage, USC Football student-athletes visited a recent Red Cross Blood Drive, and two athletes even stepped up and became first-time donors through this NIL engagement.

Hayden Treter and Willi Wascher, both offensive linemen, donated blood through the drive. Each donation has the capacity to save up to three lives. Through the drive as a whole, enough blood was collected to save 84 lives. Athletes also visited with Red Cross staff and other donors, signed autographs and took photos to show their support.

Watch the video below for Sport Central LA’s coverage of the drive and interview with one of our very own athletes.
