In Their Own Words: The Iwuchukwu Way
Vivian Iwuchukwu’s upbringing was far from traditional. The daughter of two Nigerian immigrants, she spent her childhood around the globe as her father’s Army orders took the Iwuchukwu family to South Korea, Germany and Spain. But through it all, she learned to embrace her Nigerian identity on and off the court. Now, a freshman on the women’s basketball team, Viv is waiting, and working, for her time to step into the spotlight.
“Aka aja aja na ebute onu nmanu nmanu.
This Igbo saying loosely translates in English to: ‘The hard work you put in when no one is watching will result in good things tomorrow.’ Good things will happen when you’re not afraid to get your hands dirty, to do the hard work behind the scenes without getting praise.
Growing up as the daughter of Nigerian immigrants, sharing this saying isn’t something I would have wanted to do. My Nigerian heritage isn’t something that I was always proud of. There were times when I was embarrassed by it because it made me different. But where I come from has made me who I am. And now, I couldn’t be more proud of that.
On and off the court, I want to be an inspiration for girls everywhere; Nigeria, South Korea, Germany, Spain, across the U.S. and everywhere in between to embrace who they are.
It’s not always going to be easy. But it’s going to be worth it. And I’m not done yet.”

TIME FOR A FITNESS FOCUS
USC Football student-athletes recently attended an Angel City Adaptive Fitness Class for individuals with physical disabilities through an NIL engagement with House of Victory. Throughout the class, the football athletes coached drills, helped facilitate the activities, and of course cheered everybody on.
The House of Victory athletes were the ones who came away from the class with a fresh perspective and inspiration ahead of their next workouts: “I was here to help where I could, but mainly I just took away a lot from this class,” said tight end Lake McRee. “It inspired me to see what these people have been through, and they’re still committed to working hard and getting a good workout in.
